When the CIA realizes the identities of three American spies in Brazil have been compromised, they turn to Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon to rescue the agents. What seems a routine operation turns out to be a trap designed by Juan Cabrillo's greatest enemy, a man driven by hate to seek the ultimate revenge. At the heart of the plot is a state-of-the-art ship that is identical to the Oregon: same weaponry, same technology, same ability to evade capture. The only thing it doesn't have is Cabrillo and his talented crew. Will they be enough to go up against the one ship that rivals their own?
The crew of the Oregon must piece together a series of disturbing events, including the mysterious sinking of a nuclear attack submarine and the possible discovery of a WWII-era weapon that was thought to be lost in the jungles of Brazil, in the ultimate game of cat and mouse.

A particularly nasty WWII-era weapon, a “sonic disrupter,” propels the action of bestseller Cussler’s startling 14th novel featuring the Oregon, a state-of-the-art warship designed to look like a tramp steamer (after 2018’s Shadow Tyrants, also with Morrison). The weapon drives all hands on a ship insane, causing them to attack each other, destroy anything within reach, and jump into the ocean. A bunch of bad guys, all of whom have a grudge against series hero Juan Cabrillo, have built a replica of the Oregon and seek the sonic disrupter, which was lost decades ago somewhere in Brazil. Meanwhile, Juan is given a mission by his old boss at the CIA to rescue three agents whose cover has been blown and whose lives are in peril in Brazil. Readers will happily go along for the ride as the mission proceeds with the usual ups and downs, until Juan issues orders that come as a complete surprise. The intense, riveting climax takes the Oregon where the ship has never been before. Series fans won’t want to miss this one. Agent: Peter Lampack, Peter Lampack Agency. -

Here's the latest in the series starring Juan Cabrillo, chair of the Corporation, a special U.S. government-sponsored group whose base is the scientifically sleek, weapon-at-the-ready ship the Oregon, which is neatly disguised as a floating junk heap.
