Mrs. Plansky's Revenge is bestselling author Spencer Quinn's first novel in a new series since the meteoric launch of Chet and Bernie—introducing the irresistible and unforgettable Mrs. Plansky, in a story perfect for book clubs and commercial-fiction listeners.
Mrs. Loretta Plansky, a recent widow in her seventies, is settling into retirement in Florida while dealing with her 98-year-old father and fielding requests for money from her beloved children and grandchildren. Thankfully, her new hip hasn't changed her killer tennis game one bit.
One night Mrs. Plansky is startled awake by a phone call from a voice claiming to be her grandson Will, who desperately needs ten thousand dollars to get out of a jam. Of course, Loretta obliges—after all, what are grandmothers for, even grandmothers who still haven't gotten a simple "thank you" for a gift sent weeks ago. Not that she's counting.
By morning, Mrs. Plansky has lost everything. Law enforcement announces that Loretta's life savings have vanished, and that it's hopeless to find the scammers behind the heist. First humiliated, then furious, Loretta Plansky refuses to be just another victim.
In a courageous bid for justice, Mrs. Plansky follows her only clue on a whirlwind adventure to a small village in Romania to get her money and her dignity back—and perhaps find a new lease on life, too.

Edgar winner Quinn (a pseudonym for Peter Abrams, author of the Chet and Bernie mysteries) launches a new series with this sprightly adventure featuring 71-year-old Loretta Plansky, a rich Florida widow. She and her husband, Norm, made millions by inventing the toaster knife (a device that toasts bread as it slices), and she now spends her days playing tennis, dealing with the expensive rest home that cares for her 98-year-old father, and shrewdly sidestepping investment pitches from her grown children. Late one night, Loretta receives a phone call from someone claiming to be her beloved grandson, who says he’s been arrested for driving while intoxicated and needs bail money. Loretta turns over her bank details, and the following morning, discovers that all of her accounts have been cleaned out. The FBI tells her there’s nothing they can do to retrieve the three million dollars she’s lost: their only clue is that the perpetrators are located in the small village of Alba Gemina, Romania. With financial pressure mounting, Loretta sets off for Romania herself, determined to shake down the criminals who took her frailty for granted. Mrs. Plansky is a wonderfully memorable heroine, full of wit and equally plausible as an ace tennis player and a motorcycle-driving detective with Romanian gangsters hot on her tail. Readers will be eager to see what Mrs. Plansky gets up to next. -

Petrea Burchard is delightful in this entertaining comic crime drama. Seventy-one-year-old Loretta Plansky receives a call in the middle of the night from a "grandson" in need of urgent financial assistance, so she gives him her banking information. In the morning, she discovers her bank accounts have been wiped clean. The FBI tells her there's no way to get back her three million dollars--the scammers are somewhere in Romania. As Loretta flies to Romania to find the thieves, Burchard portrays her embarrassment at having been duped and enhances her determination to get back her money. While the plot stretches credibility, Burchard is superb as Loretta, her mentally deteriorating 98-year-old father, and her worried children. Even the Eastern European gangsters are believable, thanks to Burchard's sparkling performance. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
